Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine in the Russian-Ukrainian War
Ukraine's Penitentiary Academy: enduring bombardment, rebuilding, and preserving education
The war unleashed by Russia extends beyond the front lines. The enemy deliberately targets civilian cities, destroying homes, hospitals, and educational institutions. Chernihiv, among other cities, has been a target for artillery and missile strikes since the first days of the full-scale invasion. The Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine has suffered repeated damage, with its material and technical base sustaining significant destruction.
Even in the first months of the war, the Academy's third building suffered severe damage from shelling. The second building, which was partially restored after the initial attacks, was hit again in April 2024. Portions of the windows in the first building required repair every time Russia attacked the city. For example, after the missile strike on August 19, 2023, a portion of the windows were damaged, once again forcing the Academy to address the urgent need for building restoration.
However, the Academy suffered its most severe blow on April 17, 2024. As a result of another missile attack, one of the academic buildings, which also houses a dormitory, sustained significant destruction. The classrooms were the most heavily damaged – windows were blown out, furniture was destroyed, and ceilings collapsed. Faculty offices also suffered damage – equipment, books, and resources, everything that had been built up over the years, was reduced to rubble. Debris and the shockwave destroyed the cafeteria and utility rooms, damaged building facades, and caused deformation cracks across several floors, threatening further structural collapse.
Despite the severe damage, most importantly, there were no casualties. Everyone was in the shelter, and this saved the lives of faculty, students, and staff.
